Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work remote, hybrid, or on-premise?

I have worked for the bulk of my career, remotely. My personality is ideally suited to remote and my home office setup is designed for remote with a dedicated workspace, streaming quality camera and audio, and a commercial-grade fiber optic connection. I am a proven leader for teams located in office, remote, and hybrid. I do travel frequently to do on-site work, and am well-organized for maximizing time on=site.

What are your strengths?

Leadership: I have worked diligently, with success and failure, on bringing out the best in individual contributors while simultaneously building a team culture built on accountability, respect, transparency, and performance.

Strategy AND execution: I have a proven track record for building marketing strategy that aligns with sales and corporate priorities and driving the execution to achieve outcomes that serve the business.

Player-coach: I am in my element when I can lead teams while serving as an individual contributor. My attention to detail, ability to store and recall relevant details, and ability to connect dots that lead to discovery and innovation have been proven.

I see you have a 650 area code and a Florida address?

I am a full-time resident of the sunshine state of Florida. I am originally from the SF Bay Area where I grew up, married, and raised our children. My wife is originally from Southwest Florida, Fort Myers, and we had always planned on relocating here. We purchased our farm in 2018 and moved full-time when my oldest son graduated from high school in 2022.

What is Altamont Farms?

We live on a farm with cattle, poultry, honeybees, and produce growing operations. Our farm serves our local community through markets, restaurants, and a direct-to-consumer business. We create opportunities for high school students to pursue opportunities in agriculture through the Altamont Opportunities initiative.

How do you manage a farm and work full-time?

I'll be honest and say that it is not always easy. We have organized our farm around mechanization and automation and have workers through the Altamont Opportunities programs. The day starts early on a farm, typically at 4:45 AM, and can end late in the dark hours. Through disciplined scheduling and organization, I can work full-time in technology marketing while the farm operations happen in the background.

What is something you have had to work on?

Ego. Early in my career, I needed to be right. I now understand that this need was compensation for low self-confidence. As I grew older and experienced success, the need to be right changed from being about me to delivering something valued by my colleagues. The ego is still there but now exists in a healthy space also occupied by humility and a high degree of personal and professional responsibility.

Did you quit your last role, at Coherent?

No, I was RIF'ed as part of a broader downsizing of the company. I was an easy target because I disagreed with the company's marketing direction after II-VI acquired it. I speak up when I see something going off the rails, not working, or consuming resources with no ROI. My responsibility is to the entire company to add value and produce results that impact the business. I have genuine affection for the company on many levels and count among my network strong connections to people I met and worked with over the 5 years I was with the company.

What is your marketing philosophy?

  1. Digital first. All marketing exists within the context of a digital channel.

  2. Instrumented and measured. If you commit resources to a specific activity, you are expected to report on the performance, with data against the forecast.

  3. Companies do not have markets; they have audiences. This may be semantic, but programming to an audience is more personal and direct than talking about TAMs and verticals.

  4. Respect everyone. Treat teams respectfully, listen to business units and sales teams, and build compelling content for your audiences.

  5. Be wrong, occasionally. Don't be afraid of making mistakes as long as the mistake is a first. Learn and improve, but if something is not going to work, do not put new resources on it. Marketing is an exercise in human behavior, and human behavior changes over time. What worked last year might not work this year. Push new initiatives that build new muscles.

  6. Lead, don't follow. Every company has peers, but when you use, as your justification, "so and so is doing this," you are now following. Copy successful tactics, but don't abdicate your responsibility for innovating the things that other companies will eventually follow.

Do you want to stay in photonics?

When I joined Coherent, I had no experience in lasers and minimal experience in hardware products. However, I firmly believe that good marketing practices built on a marketing philosophy translate to any enterprise product. My approach to marketing and team building has developed over time, from failures and successes. My ability to learn new things, adapt experiences, and deliver results that transform the business is integral to this.

What is your ideal company size?

I have worked in series A startups to large global enterprises. I have proven my value across the range of companies. I think a better way to answer this is to simply say that my experience and ability is better suited to growth stage to large enterprise companies. As a player-coach I am able to contribute directly while also moving the team forward, I can work across geographies, and deftly manage complex marketing plans that span multiple business units and audiences.

Who will win the 2025 college football national championship?

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide. I am confident that the winning margin will be 40+ points.
