I love QR codes… it gives me something to do with the barcode scanner on my Evo. And occasionally they perform a function that is actually useful.
A few weeks ago I started poking around and trying out different apps for creating my own QR codes and, surprisingly, it turned out to be a lot more challenging than I imagined it would be. If I were to use them on a business card I would have to get them printed, and our biz cards already have our logo on the back. Plus, who really uses business cards for a functional purpose anymore, the primary value is the reminder function they serve, not the delivery of important and otherwise not easy to acquire content.
Then I thought I might find it useful to put a QR code in my sidebar, but what info would it deliver? You are already on the URL and if you want to follow me on Twitter or Facebook it’s probably a hell of a lot easier to click on the appropriate sidebar link and do that. I may still put a QR code on the sidebar, just because I can.
Email signature! Well that is a good idea but it turns out to be a little challenging to pull off because in order for the QR code to be of a size that is readable it ends up dominating the email signature, almost to the point that you don’t notice anything else in the email. Scratch that one off the list.
