How come the critics of electronic voting systems are conspicuously quiet about good ol’ fashioned paper fraud that is being uncovered across the country? Seems to me that actual fraud in the election system should trump hypothetical fraud, irrespective of whether it’s technology-based or not.
Voter fraud is theft at it’s core, for every fraudulent vote that is cast a legitimate vote is nullified and that is voter disenfranchisement at it’s core. Where is the ACLU? Where is the EFF? Where is the NAACP? Where is the NY Times?
ACORN supporters roll out the “you should be looking at vote fraud not voter registration issues” as a way of deflecting the issue but it’s bullshit, pure and simple. That argument is like suggesting that identity theft should be ignored so resources can be focused on the real problem, credit card fraud. As is the case with identity theft and credit card fraud, voter registration fraud is a precursor to vote fraud and simply put, fraud is fraud.
The integrity of our elections system should be one of those third rail issue in politics but election cycle after election cycle we are witness to real issues of fraud and illegitimate behaviors that simply get swept under the carpet as noise in the system. It’s not noise, it’s fraud and no effort should be spared in rooting it out and putting in place systems that take every precaution to ensure that votes are counted and only legal votes are counted.
