Gotcha in WP 2.5

This is actually a bigger deal that it would appear on the surface for people who are self-hosting Wordpress, like me, and use widgets. The way it works in v2.3 is that you can use Wordpress widgets or drop script blocks in the template, but apparently you can’t have both approaches in the same sidebar. This means that if you want to do things like add preconfigured widgets, e.g. del.icio.us, and custom widgets, e.g. the Lijit search widget, you have to use generic text widgets populated with the external widget script block.

I’ve been holding off upgrading to v2.5 because of concerns about issues and incompatibilities. My experience with Wordpress has been good over the years but my confidence is eroding as I read more accounts like this.

If you’re a self-hosted Wordpress user and have upgraded to WP2.5, you need to know there is a serious ‘gotcha’ in the revised sidebar widget building section. If you use text widgets to include custom HTML, javascript or other non-PHP code and want to make changes or add new ones then be very careful how you do it.
