Jeff - my go-to resource for this (you may already know of it) is SeatGuru.com. I leverage it to book the "good" seats on appropriate airline/aircraft combinations. For example, row 22 on USAIR's domestic Airbus fleet has more leg room than 1st class, reclines, and has room in front of you for carry-ons. Check out the site and use it whenever you try unfamiliar airlines.

Completely agree with you on United. Based in Toronto, my usual airline is Air Canada, which code-shares with United. When I book a flight to the US, I always make sure that it's an Air Canada plane rather than a United code share, since the cancellation rate is much higher on United on the same routes.
