It's always nice when someone else proves my point for me. Two words: anger management.

The Armed Forces are at such a low ebb that they have to bottom-feed in places like Berkeley, hoping against hope that they can mislead enough young people to fill their quotas for at least another month. Do y'all have any clue as to why we here in Berkeley might object to such tactics? The Marines aren't "defending" jackshit, and you know it: For all the panoply, cool uniforms, guns and jets and stuff -- not to mention all that 'semper fi' horseshit -- they're hired murderers, sent wherever our imperial leaders decide that some muscle might help preserve our access to the resources inconveniently located in someone else's country. And in the process, they find themselves as expendable as soldiers have always been, subject to many of the same cruel ironies of fate as the people they've been sent to pacify. How many young Americans have to die to defend the criminal policies of Bush, Rumsfeld, and Cheney? Is there anyone left in America who believes a word those traitors have to say? Even those of you who were gullible enough to vote for Bush not once, but twice? And all the while you kneejerk patriots salute the blood-red flag and heap abuse on one community that has at least tried to resist the shanghaiing of its young people... nice going, fools.

I value diversity of character in any region, which is why I often just look the other way when Berkeley does what Berkeley does. If people chose to live in that community and subscribe to the ideals of that community, then more power to them. But having said that, this doesn't mean they are immune from criticism when they have blatantly cross a line of decency.

The irony, of course, is that when the next big earthquake hits it will be Berkeley that screams the loudest when the military is not leading the relief effort.

If you enjoy Berkeley's politics, you are going to love Boulder. I grew up in Boulder and moved to the bay about a year ago (I think this is the reverse of your movements) and find the similarity between Boulder and Berkeley to be amazing. Some of the issues you mention, like pointless letters regarding federal issues and an ignorance of economics are rampant in Boulder.

The upside is that there are some great business groups in the area that act as a support group against the insanity. Drop me a note if you are interested in connecting with any such groups.
