Empowerment is what it's all about ... and I fell for it, liking the feature just like Jeff. But I guess Alex is right, spammers are brute force bots, they don't analyze bounce messages, so you really achieve nothing. Banging on the table might be just as effective:-)

I think this feature is appealing to me because I feel proactively empowered. I have resigned myself to the fact that there is nothing I can do to stem the tide of spam, so this silly little feature makes me feel like I'm sticking it to them.

That is a patently dumb idea, and just adds to useless traffic on the net.

Believe me -- we used to have that feature in our antispam product. It's useless -- the vast majority of spam is from innocent user machines that are turned into spam zombies.

It's a cute thing to have, if you want to fake someone out by making them think you're no longer at an email address. It may (may) also work with things like legitimate newsletters.

But for the typical slimey spam, it's just a waste of bandwidth.

I saw this feature years ago in a niche product, IncrediMail. I only use it to send pictorial/animated greetings .. I'm really surprised this neat feature did not make it to the mainstream products.

In fact... why not just automate it and allow bounce messages sent to all your junk mail?
