Spot on. There needs to be an interface to continue the conversation, either in private or in public. Until that point, blogs are more presentations than anything else.

I think of a telephone conversation, and it actually happens in two places at once. Often on separate GUI's (handsets).

Authentication is an issue - perhaps Open ID through your own blog.

My bet is it will likely be RSS based - so perhaps it's you we're looking at!

Let us know when you have it sorted. Matt

Here's an idea (just formulated, not tested): How about starting your own comment blog. Whenever you want to post a comment somewhere, post it to your comment blog, and then provide a link to in the original comment posting location. Runs the risk of 'stealing' interesting conversation, i.e. the responses to your comment might end up on your blog, but at least you can track everything.

I almost like both Disqus and Intense Debate, as both provide RSS feeds of comments, but the dealbreaker for me on both right now is that while their Web interfaces show what site a comment is attached to, the corresponding RSS feed doesn't -- you just get a link back to the comments page on the provider's site.

Setting the bar low, I'd settle for a universally accepted format for comment feeds; getting to a "it just works" protocol will take a while, so I'd be happy enough for the moment if I could reliably know where the all-comments feed for a site can be found (meta tag or similar) and know what that feed will look like.

I've emailed, and posted this need on line for ages. I was using co-comment and found it had massive lags and I have lost confidence in it. Intense Debate looked like a good start, and they seem to be heading towards the universal comment tracking that you are suggesting, as does recent reviews of fav.or.it but it is all a massive pain: this has to be an opportunity on a grand scale for someone to tackle, especially since "the conversation" is the commentary....

You may want to check out - http://blog.fav.or.it/2008/01/07/favorit-api-the-future-of-comment-distribution/

We have opened up our core framework to make open distribution of comments around the blogosphere possible via a simple API.
