John,
It's no different than a highway toll lane. The security features that are part of the registered traveler program are nothing but theatre; I still have to go through the scanner, take off my shoes, and put my laptop in a bin.

Where it pays off for me is that SFO has constrained security checkpoints so cutting 15 minutes and the uncertainty out of my travel is worth $100 a year.

As for frequent flier status, I've cut back my travel on United because of their shitty service, old planes, and surly flight attendants. I spread my spend around to JetBlue, Frontier, United, Southwest and regional airlines, so what that means is that I don't have my 1k status anymore. Paying $100 a year is an easy tradeoff.

Jeff,
I am generally for this as I see no harm in it. What I can't understand is how this is any different than simply paying to cut the line? I was watching them test this in Orlando and I have tried to give it as much benefit of the doubt as possible, but I keep coming back to that earlier thought. For my personal situation, I have enough status to get into the "fancy" line at most airports that have them, so I am going to hold off paying $100 for the privilege.
