Thanks for commenting Mike. When I talked to Steve he said HR told him there is a policy about this.

Hey Jeff, While I understand your premise I think you may have over extrapolated on this one. One person receiving one email doesn't mean a whole lot. When Steve mentioned it to me I thought it was odd but I haven't heard about it prior or since. Regarding forfeiture of anything? I really don't see the two connected at any level. No smoke on the grassy knoll (yet)!

Niall,
They are certainly within reasonable rights to do this. My objection is that historically SAP has been really relaxed about this kind of stuff and it has served them well. I had my blog url on my business card when I worked there...

More on point, if you hire professional people who are in the upper quadrant of their peer group, why wouldn't you want to associate with their blogs if the topics covered are largely in the realm of the business you are in?

Not that I'm endorsing their actions as I don't know the details, why shouldn't they be able to request this?

Corporate email is an asset that belongs to the employer, not the employee, and as a result links in the signature would imply some kind of corporate endorsement, which I doubt is the case.

Maybe what is really required is a need to rethink the corporate email signature so that the employers' and employees' interests are both served.
