Chavez is doing the same thing. Insofar as Iran, who else do they have to align themselves with? The outcasts of the world are all they have left. He needs money. He's squeeze the lemon that is Zimbabwe almost completely dry of juice and is now just holding on for as many more months as he can. Inflation there (as I'm sure you know) will soon be approaching Weimar Germany levels. I'm not sure why Iran would want to ally itself with countries who are clearly only in it for the money. They are having terrible issues maintaining their oil infrastructure without the input of multinational firms and actually have to import gasoline (which they subsidize heavily) for their domestic market.
