Amazon is beginning to crank up the marketing effort for web services
1) AWS roadshow - SF & Palo Alto last week
2) AWS Newsletter - featured Digisense in May
3) Hiring people with developer relations experience

Understanding the business implications of the architectural shift is the big challenge. It is akin to the impact of open source.

Jeff, pardon me for being a bit off the marketing topic.

Amit, have you had an instance go down with out you actualy terminating it manually? We did find it interesting that EC2/S3 live side-by-side in the same house. We are still diving into the SLA/Ts&Cs but my gut feeling is there is not a big engineering problem but quite the opposite. That said, there are certainly risks that will need to be mitigated.

Jeff,

Actually, Amazon has begun to promote AWS recently. Last week, the company held developer events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley where startups presented their S3 and EC2 success stories, and several VCs talked about why they like to see startups use AWS.

It definitely opened my eyes to the possibilities with S3. Although, it sounds like EC2 leaves startups with a big engineering problem: how to deal with a database that disappears when the EC2 instance goes down. (There's no persistent storage.)

Jeff, the EC2 part of AWS is still in beta. Why? I'm not certain but this could be a factor in the lack of marketing. AWS has been working great during our experiments- granted we aren't provisioning but 1 AMI instance. I am amazed at how economical these services. Very compelling for start-ups with limited resources.

Amazon did announce the start-up challenge which may mark the end of their Zip Lock Mouth.
