U.S. car manufacturers shun diesel because environmental regulation in the U.S. is anti-diesel and diesel has a bad rep going back to 80's when some really bad diesel cars were produced. With the advent of low sulfur diesel in all 50 states, it's time for a resurgence. I already visited my Mercedes dealer and put my name on the list for a Bluetec GL series, which should be coming at the end of the year. I'll trade my Range Rover in a heartbeat for a GL with Bluetec even though the GL features less exciting styling. I never quite understood why US car manufactures where clinging onto high displacement petrol engines. I just got my new C-class 6-cylinder, 3 liter Mercedes C320CDI. This engine combined with the 7G transmission (and a highway without speed restrictions) is pure fun :-). Driving at around 140mph over a pretty long distance (Autobahn A2 from Berlin to Hannover) results in around 21mpg. Not bad! Diesel cars are pretty common and popular here in Germany.
