I've long felt that cars should be networked like other devices. The "user interface" benefits -- trip planning, real-time traffic reports, weather alerts -- seem compelling, and implementation of "smart roads" would most likely involve some on-board intelligence in the car networked with a central traffic flow agent.

The thing that has always given me pause is viruses. Any networked device would be exposed to viruses, and susceptibility to viruses goes up as processing power and programmability of a device increases. Would we need virus and firewall protection for our cars?

agree but the choke point is still the slow network. right? Probably take you 5 -10 minutes to do that when your Garmin or my PDA could be rerouted in a few seconds?

Vinnie,
This is the nice benefit of loosely coupled systems. Use your iPhone to get a new map and send the updated version to your car with the "send to car" button in gmaps.

what happens when you change your mind during the trip...ideal will be when our PDAs can access Gmaps at decent network speed. I have it on my PDA now but use another app with maps on a storage card and a bluetooth GPS...of course my maps are dated and no traffic or weather data...navigation is going through so much innovation
