Gmaps Coming to Your Car

Finally! In my house we have nav systems in our cars and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve printed out the Google map and directions to carry with me rather than punch in the address in the car. It is not that the in-vehicle system is deficient but rather the interface that a computer provides is just better and I’m the kind of person that thinks about directions BEFORE I get in the car.

I really like that this upgrade doesn’t involve buying something new but rather taking advantage of the intrinsic capabilities that software-based systems provide, upgradeability. I’ve been hoping that in-vehicle communication systems would eventually enable vehicles to be networked like other devices, that light at the end of the tunnel is looking a little less distant.

Starting next week, some Mercedes-Benz drivers will be able to plan trips to restaurants, stores and landmarks using Yahoo or Google and then send directions directly to their vehicles.
