Linkedin to Open Up, Eventually
"I talked to LinkedIn founder and Chairman Reid Hoffman on Friday at the Supernova 2007 conference about Facebook’s rapid growth and potential incursion into his territory. He told me that over next 9 months LinkedIn would deliver APIs for developers, ostensibly to make it more of platform like Facebook, and create [...]
Zimbabwe’s Inflation Hits a New High
Zimbabwe’s inflation hit a chart topping 4,530% in May, meaning for all practical purposes it is incalculable as the currency no longer has value even on the black market.
Bloomberg is reporting the black market exchange rate becuase there is no other rate… the London exchange houses don’t even have a buy rate for the [...]
Taxing Growth
"Top House Democrats today introduced wide-ranging legislation that would more than double the tax rate that private equity firms, venture capital funds and many hedge funds pay on their gains."
Increase taxes on an engine of economic growth. Shrewd.
In reality this affects a very small class of people, the few thousand that [...]
Distribution is the New “Ecosystem Play”
How many times have you heard the traditional enterprise software vendors talk about their ecosystems? "We have 450 partners building apps on our platform" as if the fact that a lot of vendors had signed up for a partner program is not only proxy for success but absolute proof.
The other aspect of this is [...]
The Great SOX Fleecing of America
According to a Financial Executives International survey of 321 companies, however, firms with greater than $5 billion in revenues spend an average of $4.7 million per year to comply with section 404.
That quote pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with SOX, compliance with zero value creation. The next time [...]
What’s in Your Bag
The Irregulars had two interesting discussion threads over the last few days discussing what we carry when we travel and what our software kit looks like. A few observations that proxy larger trends.
We’re split PC-to-Mac users about 60/40, which is interesting for a bunch of enterprise guys/gals. This is not insignificant [...]

Couple of interesting videos featuring Freeman Dyson
Tire Pressure Monitoring
One very cool automotive technology that will save gas is tire pressure monitoring, which will be a requirement on all 2009 vehicles sold in the U.S. A significant percentage of vehicles operate with under-inflated tires that not only rob fuel economy but also represent a safety hazard.
Here’s how the better systems work, a self [...]
Diesel Power Wins Again
Audi continued their domination of the ALMS yesterday in winning their second Le Mans in a diesel powered race car. Car geeks will also be interested to learn that Aston Martin defeated the mighty Corvettes to break GM’s ownership of the GT1 class.
On a related note, I was talking to a guy at Mercedes Benz [...]
AT&T to Offer Semi-Clothed DSL
It’s not yet full naked DSL because customers will still have to subscribe to local phone service and that’s at least $20 a month (if not more when taxes kick in?). In six months, and not a day sooner I am positive, AT&T will offer a full naked DSL package for around $20 a month.
Let’s [...]
