Jeff,
I think the main problem is that PowerPoint makes it easy to create mediocre graphics, but hard to create really great graphics. There are graphic design firms (including my own at http://www.kokecreative.com and the Duarte group at http://www.duarte.com) who specialize in PowerPoint and excel at using it to visually articulate complex ideas.
