Have to disagree here. I have a Nokia n800 at home that i use for web surfing when I don't need a whole laptop (looking stuff up while watching TV / reading), and my experience with it contradicts this FUD.

It has a touchscreen and a software-driven keyboard on it. I type on it with my thumbs, and all you do is keep your eyes on the screen, where the letter that you just "typed" pops up. The other piece is that the "key" (as represented onscreen), changes color (it reverses to a "negative--black goes to white, white goes to black) when it is "depressed". You can see this around the periphery of your thumb, which gives you feedback as to "yeah, you just really 'hit' the "P", Pete."

I'm sure I thumb-type just as fast on my n800 as I do on my Treo.

This is so true and no, just because it's Apple you don't get used to it. Why the radical redesign from iPod Gen 3 to 4? Because the buttons across the top give you no tactile feedback so you have no clue if the button press was registered. Even more annoying it has a "click" sound that is supposed to give you feedback doesn't play in the headphones just via the external speaker. How helpful for a device that has ear buds and plays music at me!
No tactile feedback is a killer for UI speed and comfort, go ask the Fingerworks guys. Totally revolutionary device ( price point to high yes ) no, tactile feedback made them clumsy to use as keyboards.
