They have defaulted to private and that means people can't scan a directory or mega-tree to discover links they previously were unaware of. It would be interesting to see if they could deploy an analytics function that is opt-in to enable people to discover new branches for their trees. I have a fairly uncommon familly name and would love to motivate people with the same name to start building their trees and find out if we cross lines somewhere...
