Jeroen,
I'll re-research my talking points, it could be that my references were inaccurate.

Interesting point about car accidents, one could have all manner of interesting debates about the merits of reducing public safety as a national health issue!

Lastly, an opt-out donor law would certainly make me uncomfortable. My primary reason for this is that it would suggest that I have to exercise my rights over my own body - even in death - in order to have rights over my own body.

Hi Jeff,

I think you've got some facts mixed up. One of the main reasons there aren't a lot of donors in Holland, is the fact that there aren't enough car accidents. The number is quite low, which results in not enough non-ill donors. These are all concerning donors for non-relatives, to it's not required to be a relative. To be honest, I've never heard of the fact that donors need to be relatives, I don't think this is the case in Holland.

By the way, there *are* actually talking about changing the law, but not the way you propose: currently you have to sign up to be a donor. A slight minority of the Dutch congres wants it the other way around: you *are* a donor, *unless* you sign up to not be one. It doesn't look like it's getting enough votes, but the BNN donor show sure put this on the agenda.

Jeroen,
The Dutch have the highest take up of donor cards in Europe, 44%, a fact not reported through this controversy. Another fact that you should consider is that Dutch law requires donors to be friends or family members, which one could reasonably conclude is more of a reason why 200 people a year die of kidney failure in the Netherlands. Is anyone talking about changing the law in light of The Big Donor?

Thanks for commenting, good to hear from someone actually in Holland.

Jeff,

The point of the show, being there aren't enough organ donors in Holland and we should all sign up to be one, did come across very clearly in the Dutch media, resulting in _a lot_ of new signed donor forms. Even the Dutch prime minister called the show 'not promoting Holland in the world', but the makers really did make a point and it has worked resulting in many more people signing up to be a donor or at least thinking about it.

By the way, the program was cooked up by Endemol, the company behind the Big Brother concept, so it should be no surprise they could come up with something like this :)

Kind regards from The Netherlands,
