Toggl - Online Time Tracking

Toggl is a new service for time tracking and reporting targeted to service professionals, consultants and contractors but also a potentially valuable tool for general project management.

Before I go any further, the thing I liked about this service from the start is that it was built by a software development group who was unable to find a tool for tracking time for their billable projects. (Ross, you’ll dig this, they are Estonian). The product reflects requirements actually derived from the developers needs as opposed to what they think the markets wants.

The service is straightforward, well laid out, and easy to use. You first create project areas, then invite team members into the project, which then track your time on individual tasks by clicking on a server side timer (which is nice, doesn’t depend on a browser being open) for the tasks underway. The other major functional area is reporting which spits out PDF and CSV reports in addition to simple printouts.

The service could benefit from a few additions, which I am sure the developers are well aware of. The first is a basic document management component, perhaps in the form of a wiki, that enables the project team to manage docs in addition to time. Secondly, integration with a billing service, like Freshbooks or Quickbooks, would be a great addition.

With integration into accounting, “packaging” for vertical markets (e.g. CPAs, lawyers), and additional functional buildout (documents), Toggl could be a formidable offering if for no other reason than it just works really well.
