Another utility of embargoes - assists small and medium sized publishers competing with media conglomerates. Also, in response to "Good reporters will refuse the embargo or pre-briefing and chase the story themselves" - an embargo oftentimes prompts a reporter to further coverage prior to the story release. Embargoes are essentially a construct of time-strapped writers.

I have increasingly seen more and more of the tier 1 media outlets (WSJ, NYT, etc) refusing to agree with the embargo. Good reporters will refuse the embargo or pre-briefing and chase the story themselves. This happened recently with Google's announcement of the apps premiere edition. It was quite funny because Google then had to go back to those already briefed on the announcement to tell them not to talk with the named NYT reporter.

Vivek,
It’s an abused practice among technology companies. Salesforce sent out the press release on the Koral acquisition days ahead. What’s the point of that? It’s not like they were acquiring IBM.

In my experience, only utility of embargo is in case when the company has to announce a new feature that won't be deployed in production just before the set date-time. If that is not the case, it is pretty much a pointless practice.
