Martin,
I hate that plastic packaging that everything seems to come in now. I do throw it in the recycle bin, but to tell you the truth I never really thought to check to see if it actually is recyclable.

My opinion of CFLs has changed, I'm running a pretty decent Sylvania in my desk lamp and a few others. But most of the lighting in our house is recessed so we don't have a lot of lamps. I have noticed that after they warm up the light gets a lot better.

I am a big fan of LED and OLED lighting, which has really taken the automotive world by storm.

My other gripe on the CFB front is packaging. I just threw out the packaging for four incandescent bulbs from Phillips. It consisted of two pieces of thin cardboard. One CFB from Phillips came with two sheets of cardboard and a huge amount of plastic that required scissors (and some cursin) to open.
LEDs are going to drop rapidly in price, especially when people see how nice the light can be and instant on. Have to learn more about the quantum dots...

What's interesting is that we are actually on the verge of real breakthroughs in lighting - well beyond LEDs. I am talking about quantum dots which (like LEDs) should have an effective lifetime of forever.

Martin,
I’ve had a similar concern but I think the benefits outweigh the risks in this case providing we assure proper disposal options.

One huge problem with CFBs- they contain mercury and it can easily enter the environment if (when) the bulb is broken. These bulbs need to be disposed of at hazardous waste recyling points and, according to NPR, the average American has to drive 90 miles to reach one.
Mercury is an extremely toxic heavy metal and it freaks me out that we're unleashing millions of these bulbs into the environment. I have about six in my house right now, purchased before I heard this story.
