The Widget Economy Heats Up

It’s been a busy week in widget land with not only the news about Yahoo! Pipes but also Microsoft’s Connected Services and now the news that Netvibes is releasing a widget API.

Netvibes is also developing a Universal Widget API that will let widgets talk to one another and synchronize among themselves.

It would be foolish for me not to be concerned about this but I have to say that I’m more pleased that there is such a tremendous wave of validation for the notion that real software apps can be built using loosely coupled services. There’s plenty of time to be concerned about competitive moves but for the time being I’m going to sit back and enjoy the feeling that comes from big companies finally catching on to what we have been saying for a couple of years.
