Also, I believe that President Bush has been stating verbatim that the strategy was to win, as in this excerpt:

Reporter: "What's the President's strategy in Iraq?"
Tony Snow's response: "His strategy is to win."

Vinnie,
Space wasn't a distraction for Kennedy's failure with the Bay of Pigs. In the late 50's into 1960 it was widely believed that not only did Russia have more powerful nuclear weapons but also the capability to deliver them. Improving the space program was a way to advance rocket systems research with the goal of not only delivering a man to the moon but also warheads to the Soviet Union.

Love the simplicity of "we win, they lose" Bush should use this as he seeks Iraq surge support. But ...if Kennedy had gone and sought more arms support after Bay of Pigs not sure he would have go it. Space was a nice distraction. I think Bush could do something similar with energy or education - push Iraq away from the fore front, and work it in background. Easier said than done...

The good news is that human history is chock-full of examples of learning from mistakes and going on to achieve even better things. (Great minds think alike; I just did a somewhat similar post.)
