Jeff, the concept of the UN is flawed We in the US are (rightly) suspicious of a "global police" and give the UN little leeway - but some how expect it to police the middle East and Africa and every other hot spot...

But Ban did make me laugh when he asked a reporter who questioned him in French to restate the question in english because he was not so fluid in french... the question that was asked was about the importance of french as a primary language for the UN.

Anyone at the UN is a career diplomat and that's why I can't imagine a scenario by which the UN would reform itself. Never gonna happen. The best we can hope for, I am afraid, is a lesser degree of corruption and incompetence.

I saw Ban on This Week. What stood out is that he is the ultimate career diplomat. He did not answer a single question! Not one. It was an amazing demonstration of obtuseness, slipperyness, deferring, demurring....scarily good as a demo of avoiding taking stands on issues and scarily bad for the UN.
I cannot imagine this guy doing anything that required immediate and potentially controversial action.
Based on one interview (not a fair sample I admit) I am not hopeful.
