As someone who cheers you from the "cheap seats", I would encourage you to talk with Nigel Snoade (works for Ray Ozzie). Nigel, Jack Ozzie and their team are not looking back, but forward. I was very impressed with their willingness to work alongside Google, Cisco and others at Strong Angel III (strongangel3.net), a disaster exercise and demonstration to show how emerging technologies might save more lives in the next disaster. I think Ray's group is going to succeed in changing the culture of Microsoft, within and without.

Isn't it true that we always like to root for the underdog and excoriate the gorilla? As you said Jeff, wait until we do it to Google as well. Not only is Apple exciting because Steve Jobs is exciting but Apple is exciting because it has succeeded in not being put out of business by one of those gorillas that we love to hate...and it makes cool products.

[...] It’s only interesting in that they finally have an SMB offering that sorta-maybe-just-possibly competes with Outlook & Exchange. If you think they’re not going after MS Office, there’s a bridge I’d like to sell you. You may be right in thinking that this doesn’t compete with MS Office right now, but it’s only in the same way that the early Google didn’t really compete with the then almighty Yahoo.
Jeff, pardon me while I go get a big violin and play it for MS. Every body’s out to get them - the Feds, the EEC, now bloggers. Consumers give them $ 40 billion a year. They give their R&D teams $ 6 billion a year. Results - late products, poor quality, then turn around and give massive payouts to investors rather than lower prices, improve product output. Google may get these bad habits some day but to date it has been an innvoator in a lot of areas…Even Larry Ellison has commented he cannot believe MS has Google envy. MS needs to quit looking backwards at Google and more towards much bigger players like IBM, Verizon, Oracle…ad revenue is puny compared to the $ 500 billion MS can get from markets of the top 20 IT and telecom vendors

Microsoft seems to be the brand that techies hate, but "normal" folks like....

Microsoft was voted UK's favourite brand. http://news.cnet.co.uk/software/0,39029694,49282197,00.htm
this wasnt some minor survey, but a major bit of research. The BBC was second.

Microsoft was recently voted as employer of the year in the UK, Australia, South Africa, best employer for working families.

Seems they do okay....
