[...] Coming off my earlier post about Khosla’s oil company tax initiative, I thought I would post something that supports renewable energy without prejudice. I found what has to be one of the more interesting cases in favor of renewable energy, and on top of that from a very unlikely place… Iraq. Commanders have done the math and realized that, if they could use renewable forms of energy at bases in western Iraq, fewer truckloads of fuel would be required, and more combat troops out there could be chasing hostile forces. As a result, the commanders are calling for immediate shipments of solar panels, wind turbine generators and fuel cell generators.
You are not the only one to have spotted this anomaly. One of the leading Peal Oil websites (www.theoildrum.com) is devoting a huge amount of its not inconsiderable energy to debunking (http://www.theoildrum.com/story/2006/7/24/202222/351) large swathes of Khosla's optimistic science and gently misleading statistics. He (Khosla) at least had the balls (http://www.theoildrum.com/story/2006/8/8/2049/64576) to respond to some of the criticism his more political presentations had caused. Interestingly largely without the supporting "statistics" which "prove" his investment thesis.

Some of the responses are a little intemperate - they share your scepticism - but Khosla's article and the criticism is worth reading as an advanced primer.
