Bloggers shaking up analyst industry

Good article in InformationWeek about how a small group of bloggers are attacking the traditional analyst firms. There’s still quite a way to go before bloggers are a threat to the Gartners of the world, but considering that the analyst firms are pretty static in terms of coverage and the amount of output while the bloggers are expanding dramatically it isn’t a stretch to see that on the trajectory we are on bloggers could eclipse analysts. There are two gating factors that can’t be underestimated, the first is the quality of the product that analysts put out is high quality and very polished (yeah, that still matters), and the customer relationships they have ensure a level of incumbency for several years to come. Having said all that, take a look at Zoli’s post on Duet as evidence that the gap is closing…

If you like your IT analysis fast, free, and with a heavy dose of attitude, you’re in luck. A new breed of technology analysts has emerged: They use blogs to spread their insights, and they’re not afraid to pick a fight with IT vendors or one another. These E-pundits want to shake the foundation of IT analysis and influence the market, forcing conventional firms such as Forrester, Gartner, and Yankee to adapt or get left behind, much the same way the packaging and reach of cable TV newscasts forced network news to rethink its role.
