Back to Jeff's main point - there's a neat British saying: 'Horses for courses' which is why I don't believe Workday with Dave is a surefire winner. It may be, but ithings have changed a lot in the last 15 years. So does past experience matter? Sure - but don't these companies run the risk of replicating the same management structures and practices that worked in the past but which seem less relevant today?

As usual, Hasso is way way ahead of everyone else.

I think, and I don't have the numbers in front of me, that we have actually done what you are suggesting as evidenced by the fact that our deal sizes have gotten a lot smaller while at the same time our net margin has improved steadily over the last 3 years.

Hasso's point from 10 years is even more valid then. I know I am anal about this but from a buyer and investor perspective an industry which spends half its dollars convincing customers and to bill/collect/other admin to buy is fundametally flawed. if I was CIO I would aggressively try to save every dollar and spend the whole dollar on my budget not half on vendor sales and marketing....I would kiss Bill's feet every morning if he could deliver the same results at 20c on the dollar...but then not sure he wants to see me even once a year -)

Vinnie,
Bill is a great leader, just like Paul was. Bill is responsible for a sales, marketing, and support organization, but let's not forget that he running a company that is larger on it's own than almost all of the other companies in this business.

Re sales and marketing expenses, that argument transcends any specific industry discussion and even in technology we have the stats that demonstrate open source companies spend more on sales and marketing than no product and services.

Has the industry really changed? Hasso used to ask why we need to spend so much on sales and marketing back in the mid 90s. . If anything it has gotten worse almost 50c of every dollar in Sg&A. Bill is a great sales guy, but hate to say it so was Jeremy when SAP was not a major brand in the US. I like both Bill and Jeremy, but things have not evolved that much using Hasso's old benchmark...my 2c.

Good read Jeff...

It's pretty astounding to look back at where i2 and Manugistics (and others) were sitting just four or five years ago and what the SCM industry has become in the post-bubble, post-B2B world.

What's ironic is that many of the notions that drove B2B consortiums and the promise of supply chain + demand chain optimization are NOW becoming feasible...yet the guys who fostered those ideas (and are now paying the price for not having the code to backup the slideware) are getting scooped up by vendors who were once niche adjuncts to their core markets.
