Thanks for commenting, I should update this post to reflect that I have continued to use mailtags and find it quite useful now. In short, I get it.

MailTags also lets you tag messages with free from notes, projects, dues dates, priorities and create iCal toDos and Events.
You can create smartmailboxes based on this information (for example, any message with a to do item that is due in the next 3 days)

Also because the mail resides on your computers, the metadata is searchable by spotlight.

BTW in the interest of disclosure, I am the creator of MailTags

Quite a bit of work too, to think of all the tags you need to give something.

maybe because you have to define labels and apply them to a message, as opposed to defining a bunch of tags on a message ad-hoc. Of course, the interesting thing about tags is not that you can tag something, it's what you do with the pile of tags once you get some mass of tagged content. Additionally, tagging across a network (e.g. a bunch of mailboxes in addition to your own) would result in some interesting resutls.

How is this different from Google Labels? Google Email supports multiple 'labels' for an email message.
