My point exactly. Young people entering the workforce today expect instant messaging to be there, workers entering tomorrow will expect blogging, myspaces, facebook, and a myriad of other social computing tools. It would be like you and I joining a company in 1996 and not having email... which was the case with me when I was with Ross Systems in the early 1990's. The argument to email was "I live in voicemail, I don't need another system" and ironically the argument I hear with RSS today is "I live in email, I don't need another system"!

Companies competing for the best workers are going to find themselves at a disadvantage if they don't embrace the tools that this generation consider their primary means of communicating and consuming information.

I don't know the projected timing on this but here's my anecdotal thinking. My son's 15/16 and spends most of his time inside social software apps. In 5 years time, he'll be looking around for a grad trainee position (I hope) - what do you think he'll say to those companies who have not implemented social software apps? Who's going to hold the value in the those interviews? That's 2010-11 timeframe. Not so far off, maybe earlier if you believe the 17-18 year old age group are as/more tech savvy as my son.
