Not sure why everyone seems so surprised that its Oracle behind the SfDC troubles. After all, its Charles Philips who said "In this case, I think it would be more fun to crush them," when questioned about acquiring SfDC.
I would say, oddly enough, Oracle seems to be sticking to their words.

It kind of rubs me the wrong why when an executive says they want to crush a customer. As you know, SfDC runs both Oracle Apps and DB.

Anshu,
I think that what this says is that if you take Larry Ellison's money to fund your company be prepared to take his database as well.

So Salesforce.com uses an 'enterprise' database and not an open source db like mysql. What does this problem say? a) Oracle is not good enough. b) Even with the best-of-breed (Oracle), you will have issues once in a while. It could be worse with not-so-reliable other dbs.

Jeff,

I can confirm the report. After we complained about the issues, Benioff (or his office) sent out an email to us (and probably other angry customers) explaining that an Oracle issue had taken SFDC down on the last day of the quarter.
