What is interesting to me is that the unions are falling apart at a time when they are clearly too powerful. If the domestic auto makers and airlines are falling apart because they couldn't negotiate deals good enough to even stay in business doesn't that suggest that their unions are too powerful? A paradox of union success? While there are many metrics by which one could question the success of unions at protecting their members over the last 20 years, when considering the increased global supply of unskilled/semi-skilled labor, it is amazing that unions have even been able to hold any ground at all.
