Web 2.0 forces a company to adopt the one thing any good CTO should loath, dependencies. You have to allow your company to be dependent on other people’s code, their voices, their data, and their personal motivations that can’t necessarily be overridden by money.
I think that famous quote by Dell that Apple should “break up the company and give the money back to shareholders” (or something like that) will follow Dell to his grave, especially given that Apple now has a higher market cap than Dell.
